Dear Ted,
My name is Guy Wooles and I run an environmental arts project called Paper Penguins. I am writing to ask whether you would be interested in exchanging links.
Also, after discovering your site by accident, I wondered whether you would like to take one of my penguins as an assistant teacher and document the work of the school through the eyes of one of my rare paper penguins.

Please e-mail me if you need any more information although you should be able to get more of an idea from my website.

One of my penguins already has a seat booked on the next expedition to the north pole in late March!

I would appreciate your comments.
Speak to you soon.
All the best

Aloha Guy - Thanks for the e-mail! I'll happily put in a link in my intro page, and you are welcome to put in any desired links to my pages.
The origin of my penguin pages goes back to the penguin e-mail list (Dave Houston - with Dennis is on that list too) and the need to get some images from people off the e-mail part and onto a more reasonable venue. And I notice we are both on the sphensiformes ring.
I cruised a bunch of your site, and like it! (Have you seen Penguin's Pics and Travels, from Canada... they take their penguin all over!) If one of your penguins has the urge to visit Hawaii, and interact with some of my students, by all means put him/her on a plane to visit. I can show them the sights, and depending on how long they want to stay, they may go on a few trips.

In the next 5 months I'll be over on the Big Island, maybe visiting the live lava, and either going to New Zealand, or Thailand, or???? for a couple weeks in March.

BTW, there are ways of getting the penguins to the South Pole, The New South Polar Times e-mail group gets e-mail from people at the Pole and there are a few there that may be able to help a curious penguin.... I think people should take their penguins to more places... not to mention have them go visiting on their own.... I usually take one or two along, just so they can tell the others about the adventure when we get back.

Cheers and penguins...

Ted,
Thanks for your e-mail. I have a few penguins here pecking at my ankles wanting to be the one to go to Hawaii. Unfortunately most of them are going to be disappointed and won't talk to me for hours (well, until teatime at least). I would love to send you a penguin for you to do with as you wish - especially educational and/or environmental - so you'd better let me know your address so that I can pack his (or her) bags.

What has happened to the Sphenisciform ring? I think it might have closed down - I haven't been able to get onto it.

You must give me more information about the New South Polar Times e-mail group because I've been trying to get a penguin there but, as yet, I've had no joy.

I bet the weather over there is gorgeous, isn't it. Well, over here it's a bitch. I think Britain is experiencing the first major signs of global warming and rising sea levels. Soon we will have penguins here I'm sure!!

Anyway must get to bed before I wake up.
Good to speak to you and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Aloha Guy -
My address -

I will attempt to placate the rest of the birds with stories of Hawaii... I can probably take the visitor to several of the local penguin sites - Sea Life Park and Hilton Hawaiian Village are the main residences, Diamond Head crater, Halemaumau crater, and many other locations abound. Maybe the others can come visit during the penguin World Tour.

The Ring - I think it moved "ownership" from the original host to another.. Ahh, it is still there...
http://nav.webring.yahoo.com/hub?ring=spheniscus&list
will get you to the ring site. I just had a look there...

For the South Pole - Drop a note to Katie Wallett, she's a teacher and involved with the list, and she can probably hook you up with Katy Jensen who just got to the Pole as the summer manager of the pole station... Katie Wallett.
Describe what you are trying to do, and ask if she can forward the message on to Katy or to Andrea, who is going to winter over....
If you can get them to agree and get the bird on the plane, it should get there in a reasonable fashion. Another option is getting it to an antarctic peninsula base. Contacting Marine Expeditions - an antarctic tour group might get one or more of the birds to Arctowski and Bahia Paraiso....

Weather in Hawaii.... well, we are heading into our "winter" we just had an amazing downpour on the Big Island. 30+ inches in 24+ hours. I missed it, but my sweetheart had an interesting time. Still - temperatures are usually in the upper 70's low 80's (most here still use Farenheit - ugh!) and I usually have fans going in my classroom. The "Windows" in the room are wooden louvers...
Clouds form over the mountain going down the middle of the island, but a few miles away in Waikiki it is usually clear and sunny. So, I'm not complaining about the weather.

Are you in the Bristol area... I think I missed that in an earlier e-mail or web-site.....
I haven't been to the UK in hmmmm 18 years (has it really been that long???)

More later - class just got out (I'm a perennial student) and it is time for food and grading papers.

cheers - ted

Dear Ted,
Just a quick note to say that I will be sending 'Tawaki' to you tomorrow. He will be travelling first class air mail so should be with you by the end of next week. You'll laugh when you see his travelling outfit but he thinks it suits him. I didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise.
If he falls over or grazes himself whilst he's with you all you need to do is patch him up with a little sellotape or similar and he'll be o.k.

I'll e-mail you tomorrow to confirm flight details etc.
Give us a shout when he arrives.

Speak to you later.

I'm glad to hear that Tawaki is on his way!!! What a thing for a penguin to do, fly around the world. I'm looking forward to the joys of showing him around the islands.
The vacation is coming up soon, and he'll come over to the big island for the festivities. I'll try and keep him away from the active lava, but I think he will enjoy seeing evidence that the ancient Hawaiians also revered penguins when I take him to the petroglyphs....

Another person you can e-mail is Andrea Grant, as well as Katy Jensen.... and of course, all my e-mail notes on their addresses are at home... both Katy and Andrea are at the pole... Katy is there just for the summer.

Tawaki is here! Arrived on Monday, or was it Saturday.... or? I've been remiss in replying, not to mention giving him the grand tour. I've been busy plus sick and didn't want to offer up any odd germs... the other penguins have been hearing rumors about him and have been clamoring to meet him. Introductions should be beginning tomorrow and Saturday as the paper I have to turn in is due Friday afternoon.
Tawaki will be visiting the Big Island starting Sunday! I'll get more details about the adventures in coming days - weeks...

Dear Ted,
How are thing's in Hawaii? I hope the weather's better there then it is here. Or is that a stupid question?
I just thought I'd drop a line to see how you and Tawaki are doing. Have you introduced him to your students yet, and if you have do they now think you're crazy and look at you strangely? I recently sent one of my penguins off on a penguin-watching trip to the South Pole and Antarctica with Wallace and Gromit's dad, Nick Park. Do you know of him? I'm sure your students do (the guy who made film 'Chicken Run'). I'm just waiting now to see what they did with him.
I'm off myself on a world(ish) trip. I'm going to Australia, New Zealand, Rarotonga and then back via LA. Unfortunately I couldn't get Hawaii or Alaska included in the ticket - I did try. Hopefully that will be another trip.
I am leaving at the beginning of April and will be away for about 6 months. Don't worry because I'll be providing everyone with an alternative address for them to send any correspondence so that I can update the site while I'm away. I've also got somebody to manage the site in case there's any problems at my end. This project is truly global now!
Any conservation problems going on in Hawaii that might be worth mentioning on the website? I'm trying to make it a lot more environmentally aware before I go but I have loads of packing to do (I'm moving back to the green, green, grass of home - Wales) not to mention my brother's stag night to organise.
My penguins send their love to you and Tawaki. They hope that he's found a nice local pub to go to. All my penguins seem to have a not-necessarily unhealthy taste for beer - especially the Welsh favourite, Brains SA, also known as Skull Attack or Sudden Amnesia!
Anyway, I'll let you get back to the sun and surfing.
Take care and I'll speak to you soon.

Just a quick note to let you know Tawaki and I haven't fallen off the other side of the earth... This weekend I should get the first of Tawaki's adventures off to you as well as the first of the images... So far, he has kept out of trouble, and has exercised great restraint around the students... some of them have said very rude things about him and I hope he didn't hear them... others have lavished attention on him, and introduced him to the joys of chemistry.
>Dear Ted,
>How are thing's in Hawaii? I hope the weather's better there then it is here. Or is that a stupid question?
Well, it does rain now and again
>I just thought I'd drop a line to see how you and Tawaki are doing. Have you introduced him to your students yet, and if you have do they now think you're crazy and look at you strangely?
they have always thought I am a bit strange!!!

Alas, I haven't seen Chicken Run yet, but the first 3 Wallace and Gromits are showing their age!!! I like running the Penguin in the bottle, and falling sheep in slow motion....

Ahhhh, Rarotonga is a great place!!!! hmmm, do I have time to sneak down?

Hmmm, I'll have to get a listing of good links... Hawaii has all sorts of issues going on - alien species and their effects... Miconia, pigs (and that has cultural as well as environmental overtones), The small amount of time I spent in Wales, I enjoyed... Llangollen, Hay-on-Wye, and a couple other places that have slipped my mind.... now if I just had a spare year and the appropriate money

Ted,
Thanks ever so much for those fantastic photos. I seriously found myself jealous of a paper penguin. You didn't tell me your students were so cute! Now I wish I had booked a flight to Hawaii as well. Oh well, my girlfriend probably wouldn't have understood anyway.
What I've done is just linked to the pages on your site rather than reproducing them on mine. I don't think I could've done as good a job anyway.
I have backed up your html and the fotos just in case your site goes down in June as you mentioned. I can't wait to see the other photos now.

PS Mac the penguin is in Hawaii at the moment. You never know you might actually bump into him. If you check out Mac's page and his e-mails there is a lovely e-mail from a little girl who met Mac at a b'n'b. I think I actually published the address of the b'n'b where she lives.

got to watch out for that... the heat makes you do it... is it the lagers or the bitters?

excellent - then, after you are done diving on the GBR, you can head back to Phillip island and go diving with penguins :-) (or Kangaroo Island)
If you are going to Tasmania, on the north and slightly western coast, you will come to the town of Penguin!!!! there are penguins there, and, of all the cool places I'd think about teaching, Penguin High School would be one of the ultimates!!!

I'm heading over to the Big Island for part of the summer, then a quick trip to Las Vegas (for a conference) and a few locations in Arizona...
Tawaki will be going with me, if he makes it to the Big Island... at this very moment he is lying down in a box in a shipping container! He will be moved onto the Barge tomorrow, and then towed with a big tug boat over to Hilo Harbor, he doesn't have anyone to talk to for the trip, though he does have a radio or two nearby, and he could use my amateur radio callsign if he could hook up the radio, antenna and battery :-)
He wasn't all that pleased about spending time in the box in the container, but I told him there would be penguins to visit with on the other end, as well as river otters, and whoever else we can find.
Tawaki will join me in Las Vegas, Meteor Crater, and maybe a quick look into the Grand Canyon!!! I'll do my best to document the continuing travels of this phenomenal entity :-)

Sounds like you and Tawaki are going to have a great summer. At the moment I am back in Sydney but I will be flying to Auckland on the 27th of June where I have a few trips planned - I'm meeting up with the marketing director of the WWF in Wellington, have been invited to visit the people and penguins at the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust in Otago and will be visiting Dennis and Dave Houston in Oamaru.
I have just got back from travelling from Darwin to Alice Springs (the murder capital of Australia) and then to Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kings Canyon and the Olgas. Uluru was far beyond my expectations and I recommend it to anyone.
Have a great summer, both of you, and I'll speak to you soon.

I'm now over on the Big Island - Tawaki is relieved to get out of the box for the sea voyage - though the trip went well.
The YEPT people are great, and I've had e-mail correspondence with Dave Houston in Oamaru, but not met him. If you have a car, check out Moeraki and the lighthouse - and penguins - Uluru is great - I was there when I was 12 or 13, and climbed to the top- those were the less politically correct years :-) sunset on the rock was great, and we could go into the caves that are now off limits for cultural reasons. it was also a pretty empty place - no giant campgrounds or airport or hotels... I think there were about 20-30 of us watching the sunset, and probably no more than50-100 people within 10 miles of Uluru.

Hi Ted,
Just thought I'd better send you an update to let you know that I am still alive.
I am currently in Oamaru staying with Dave Houston. I've been here for quite a while now (off and on) so I hope he doesn't get sick of me! It's been good to see Dennis again also.
I've been to Moeraki to see the boulders and to the lighthouse to see Janice Jones who looks after all the sick penguins. Did you know that one of her old patients, a yellow-eyed penguin called Inca, still comes to visit her in
the hope that she'll give him some food?
The blue penguins at Oamaru haven't been turning up for their fans due to a bad storm a few weeks ago. It looks like the storm forced their food-source out to sea so they had to follow. The nests here should be full of fat penguins on eggs, but they're not. They've only just started returning now after an absence of approximately 17 days! But every time I go down to see them none come in - everyone down there thinks that I'm a jinx!
The funny thing is that I've seen quite a few rare yellow-eyed penguins but hardly any common blue penguins. 'Shit happens', as they say.
I'm going down to Dunedin in the next few days and then on to Invercargill and eventually round to Milford Sound. I've already met the people at the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust and they now have a paper penguin all of their own
called Herbie. Hopefully I'll get them to take me down to the reserves.
Anyway, I hope you are looking after yourself and Tawaki and that you had a good holiday. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing what you did.
Take care of yourself,
Guy

Good to hear from you - I have two new installments of Tawaki's travel, and as soon as I shoot another frame or three, I'll get the next installment. I just have to turn the images into a page, or two. (Penguin in the Desert & Tawaki at Meteor Crater - in the camera, Tawaki hits it big at Las Vegas)
Travelling with Tawaki is so much fun... explaining the global nature of Paper Penguins, and the globe-trotting aspect too... getting people to have their picture taken with Tawaki..... Oh, yeah, I've got Tawaki at the beach in Hawaii :-)
If you see Janice from Moeraki again, tell her I'm interested in putting her Penguin narrative I got from her years ago on the web. If she doesn't have any objection. (If you have an address for her, I'll write the letter myself :-) )
Some of the YEPs on my web page are "hers" from the reserve there.
In all my NZ trips, I've only seen an ex-Little Blue Penguin, though I did see White Flippered Penguins (took me awhile to find them) - Fiordland Crested Penguins also made my list :-)
Send an aloha to Dave and the other penguin people you meet :-) and, of course, any other penguins :-)
