SubjectPaper Penguins

Hi,

My name is Guy Wooles and I’m an artist and designer. Twelve years ago I set up the Paper Penguin Project as a final year piece of work for my degree in Fine Art in Context. The project was designed to be a fun and interesting as well as educational but sadly it has lain dormant for a few years so now I've decided to reinvigorate the site and get it up and running again.

I am planning to provide educational and conservation information on the site as well as a page for penguin/wildlife related worksheets for educational establishments as well as individuals. So if there's anything you think I might include on the site or you have any ideas or information I can use I would appreciate your suggestions.

If you would like to take part in the project by taking one of my penguins and documenting its experiences with you it could be an interesting and fun way to show people the work that you do. Also you could use it as a vehicle to raise issues that you are currently dealing with.

I assume this is the first you have heard of the Paper Penguin Project so all the information can be found on the site for you to decide whether you would like to get involved in the project.

I have had penguins at the North Pole, New Zealand and Hong Kong – to name but a few. So they are already well travelled!

I have added your link to my site and was also hoping that you might place my link on your site. If you don’t think it appropriate this does not mean that I will remove your link.

Thank you for your time

Guy Wooles

Dear Guy

Thank you so much for your e-mail. We would love to be involved in your paper penguin project. We are in the process of redesigning our website and would certainly be able to put a link on our new site. Our new site will also have a resource section and we’ll be posting resources for teachers there as well.

How do we go about starting the process?

Carolé

Hi Carolé,

Thanks for replying. I was wondering whether you would like to take one of my Paper Penguins and document the work that is done at the foundation in the form of photos and emails? This information can then be published on the Paper Penguins website. The penguin can be used to highlight any conservation or education issues that you would like to raise, as well as being a fun and interesting way to see 'behind the scenes' of SANCCOB.

I have just got back in contact with one of my penguins, Elvis, who is residing with Sue Dow. Sue is the research and sustainability officer at Bristol Zoo. I'm hoping the Project could also be away of bringing different zoos and organisations together to share information and ideas.

If you would still like to get involved that would be great. Let me know what you think and if you are happy then we can arrange for a very lucky penguin to come and stay!

Thanks again for your support and all the best.

Speak to you soon

Guy

Hi Guy

Thanks for your quick reply and yes we would most certainly like to participate in your paper penguins programme. As a matter of fact, SANCCOB has a working relationship with Bristol Zoo and just hosted an environmental education officer at our facility for the past 10 days.

Is the paper penguin a specific species or can we assign a species to it. I also assume that we can give it a name?

Hi Carole,

At this very moment I have a group of penguins down the local pub playing 'knockout pool' to see who will be lucky enough to visit and work with you at SANCCOB.
If you could let me know the address for the lucky penguin to be sent to then I will sober them up, pack their bag, pack their lunchbox and send them on their way.
The Paper Penguin is a specific species, though for some reason Wikipedia hasn't updated their information despite my insistence of their existence. You are more than welcome to name your penguin. If you have a name in mind already then I can set up a page for them. If not, don't worry, I can leave that part blank in their biography. Might be a good competition for local schoolchildren as well.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Guy

I think you can perhaps sober up that penguin for us and mail to:

As soon as we’ve received it, it we’ll determine a name and get back to you?

Cheers

Hi Carole,

Just a quick enquiry to check that your, as yet unnamed, paper penguin has arrived safe and sound and that they are behaving themselves!
